ODENDAAL, M.W., & HENTON, M.M. 1995. The distribution of Pasteurella haemolytica serotypes among cattle, sheep and goats in South Africa and their association with disease. Onderstepoort Journal of Veterinary Research, 62:223-226 Over an 8-year period (September 1986 to March 1994), a total of 497 organ specimens from sheep and goats and 96 from cattle, were received for the isolation of Pasteurella haemolytica. They were collected in seven geographical areas in South Africa (as it existed before the April 1994 elections). These areas include the eastern Cape, Transvaal (new name: Gauteng), Namibia, Orange Free State (new name: Free State), Natal (new name: KwaZulu-Natal) , western Cape and the northern Cape. This investigation does not represent the statistical incidence of the organism from each reg ion, only the distribution of serotypes isolated from organ specimens submitted from diseased animals in these regions. Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 6 was the most prevalent type isolated from sheep and goats, but was followed closely by types 9 and 2. From cattle, P. haemolytica serotype 1 comprised 39% of the isolates. In sheep and goats, the majority of serotypes were associated with pneumonia, followed by gangrenous mastitis ("blue udder") and septicaemia. The situation in cattle was similar regarding the incidence of pneumonia followed by septicaemia. Up to 33% of the isolates from cattle and sheep specimens were non-typeable.

Characterization, ribotyping and capsular PCR typing of Pasteurella multocida isolated from Iranian sheep and goats

Pasteurella multocida is considered to be an important cause of ovine pneumonia and results causes considerable economic losses in Iran. Ribotyping PCR (Ribo-PCR) was used for investigating the diversity of ovine and caprine P.multocida. A total of 120 swab tonsil and nasal samples were obtained from sheep and goats. They were analyzed by biochemical tests and Ribo-PCR 16S-23S ribosomal RNA gen...

Isolation and Identification of Pasteurella multocida by PCR from sheep and goats in Fars province, Iran

During one year period from 2010 to 2011 the samples from pneumonic animals were taken and transported to the laboratory. Pasteurella multocida were identified in 16.6% of animal by biochemical test. The high incidence of P. multocida was obtained in the south of Fars province, where the area was warm region. The Mean Death Time between the isolates was 12-18 and 19-24 hours. Only the capsular ...

Evolutionary genetics of Pasteurella haemolytica isolates recovered from cattle and sheep.

Genetic diversity and relationships among 194 Pasteurella haemolytica isolates, which were recovered predominantly from cattle (39%) and sheep (58%) suffering from pneumonic pasteurellosis in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States, were estimated by examination of allelic variation at 18 enzyme-encoding loci detected by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis. The isolates formed two majo...

Zoonotic helminths are often transmitted to humans through domestic animals. This retrospective study was performed to estimate the prevalence of some important zoonotic helminthic infections of the liver and lung including echinococcosis, fasciolosis and dicrocoeliasis in Kazerun and Shiraz abattoirs, Fars, Iran, during 2011-2013. A total of 12381 sheep, 6473 cattle, 22847 goats, 66 camels, an...

Distribution of virulence adhesion associated genes and antimicrobial susceptibility in Pasteurella multocida from ovine pasteurellosis in Iran

Pasteurella multocida is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for pneumonia of lambs and goats, respiratory atrophic rhinitis of swine. Although the molecular basis of the pathogenicity and host specificity of P. multocida is not well understood, several studies have reported that a number of proteins are correlated with the pathogenic mechanisms. Adhesins have a crucial role in mediating colo...
